Formal Early Literacy Assessment

Formal Early Literacy Intake is designed for young children in kindergarten and early grade one. Many families seek this assessment when they want an updated picture of their child’s speech and language development or when they have questions about early reading skills and the possibility of future reading difficulties.

This assessment helps you understand your child’s strengths, identify any areas that may need support, and learn how to help them thrive as they begin their literacy journey. This assessment may include:

  • Case History: We learn about your child’s background, development, and any concerns you may have.
  • Consultation with the School Team: With your permission, we connect with your child’s teachers to ensure everyone is working together.
  • Speech Sound and Oral Mechanism Evaluation: We examine how your child produces sounds and how their mouth structures support speech.
  • Assessment of Spoken Language: We evaluate how your child understands and uses language in everyday communication.
  • Assessment of Early Literacy Skills: We assess key early reading skills such as phonological awareness, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and other foundational skills linked to later reading success.
  • Debrief: We explain results, answer questions, and plan next steps.
  • Written Report: You will receive a detailed report with any diagnoses (if applicable), clear recommendations, and practical strategies to support learning at home and school. This report is excellent for creating an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) or adding more information to an existing school code.

Formal Advanced Literacy Assessment

The Formal Advanced Literacy Intake is designed for children ages 8 and older who may be struggling with reading, spelling, writing, or understanding language in the classroom. Many families seek this assessment when they notice ongoing challenges with reading fluency, comprehension, or spelling. This assessment provides a thorough, individualized look at your child’s speech, language, and literacy skills. Our goal is to understand why your child is having difficulty and to give you a clear plan for how to help. This assessment may include:

  • Case history: We learn about your child’s strengths, challenges, school experience, and family history of learning differences.
  • Consultation with your child’s school team: With your permission, we connect with teachers to understand how your child is doing in class and what supports are currently in place.
  • Speech sound and oral mechanism evaluation: We check for any speech or oral-motor factors that may contribute to reading or spelling challenges.
  • Assessment of spoken language: This includes understanding language, using language, vocabulary, grammar, narrative skills, and how your child processes verbal information—key areas linked to reading comprehension and written expression.
  • Assessment of literacy skills: We formally assess decoding, phonological processing, spelling, reading fluency, and reading comprehension to understand your child’s current literacy profile and identify any risk factors for reading disorders.
  • Debrief: We explain results, answer questions and plan next steps.
  • Written report
You will receive a detailed report with diagnoses (if applicable), your child’s learning profile, individualized recommendations, and evidence-based strategies to support progress at home and at school. This report is excellent if you are looking for your child to have an Individualized Learning Plan, or if your child already has a code, and you are looking to add more information to their file.
