We provide collaborative and evidenced-based literacy assessment and intervention to families in the Edmonton area. Our collective is formed by our founders, a Speech-Language Pathologist and a Literacy Specialist, along with practicing classroom teachers that are supported to deliver high-quality, personalized reading

United by a shared passion for literacy and evidence-based practice, Carly and Sarah founded The Literacy Collective® to support educators and families in helping every child become a confident reader. After recognizing the gap between what research tells us about how children learn to read and what is often taught in classrooms, they created The Literacy Collective® to bridge that divide with practical, effective, science-aligned guidance.

At The Literacy Collective®, our mission is to empower children, families, and educators through evidence-based literacy assessment and instruction. We bridge the gap between research and classroom practice by providing clear, accessible, and effective support grounded in the science of reading. Through collaboration, compassion, and specialized expertise in language and literacy development, we help every learner build the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Our experienced and dedicated interventionists have the expertise of classroom teaching and specialized training in structured literacy intervention. With ongoing mentorship from our founders, our interventionists use an evidenced-based approach to target reading, spelling and writing.
Dr. Sarah Novosel-Ulbrich is an experienced educator and literacy specialist with more than 15 years in the classroom. She holds a Doctorate in Languages and Literacy from the University of Calgary, where she researched how multimodal and embodied literacy practices support language acquisition. Her passion for language learning began early in her career and was shaped by her Master’s work at the University of Portland, which explored how poetry recitation enhances reading development.
Sarah believes children learn best through rich, engaging experiences—song, movement, storytelling, and creative expression—and she brings that philosophy to every learning environment she creates. She holds degrees in English Literature and Childhood Education from the University of Alberta’s Faculté Saint-Jean and is fluent in French and English, with teaching experience ranging from early childhood to adult learners.
Today, Sarah contributes her expertise to university teaching, course development, and literacy intervention. She is deeply committed to building joyful, inclusive, evidence-informed learning spaces where all children can thrive with language.
